A primeira vez que vi os trabalhos de Newsha Tavakolian, eu estava pesquisando sobre fotógrafas e feminismo. Como parte de um artigo que escrevi sobre fotógrafas brasileiras, feminismo e artes visuais contemporâneas, eu estava com vontade de descobrir outras artistas que dialogassem sobre o feminino.
Apesar de ter tido a sorte de ter ido pessoalmente ver a exposição de Frida Kahlo “Conexões entre mulheres surrealistas no México”, eu fiquei impressionada por ver que ela esteve cercada de outras profissionais mulheres, formada como uma rede estável e resistente.
Sentada em frente ao meu computador, no Nordeste do Brasil, de alguma forma, no processo de pesquisa, eu descobri incríveis obras de artes visuais contemporâneas. Eu vi algumas informações sobre outra exposição de mulheres que não eram nem estadunidense, nem europeias: “Se who tells a story – women photographers from Iran and the Arab World” (mulheres fotógrafas do Irã e do mundo Árabe), que me chamou atenção.
Fiquei tão impressionado por aquelas imagens, mas de alguma forma, a série de Tavakolian, se tornou meu centro de atenção. Intitulada “Listen” (Ouça), aqui vem um spoiler: trata-se de texto visual sobre cantões proibidas de “falar”.
Invisibilidade e não-ouvidas, são expressões recorrentes quando pensamos sobre a história das mulheres, não importa em qual segmentos elas estiveram. Essa exibição (agora, um livro) é um ponto de vista de dentro de suas culturas e alguns estereótipos de como são vistas por que está de fora.
Vistas de forma distorcidas desse modo, então, o que escrevo aqui é, na verdade, um convite a buscar mais informações sobre fotógrafas não-brancas, no mundo inteiro, e você irá se deparar com obras de artes incríveis.

The first time I saw Newsha Tavakolian´s works, I was researching about women photographers and feminism. As part of an article I wrote about Brazilian women photographers, feminism, and contemporary visual arts, I was willing to find out other women artists dialoguing about been a female. Even though I was lucky to be personally at Frida Kahlo´s exhibition named “Connexions between women surrealists artists in Mexico,” I was amazed to see how she surrounded herself among other women professionals, as a stable and sturdy net. Sitting in front of my computer, in Northeast (Brazil), somehow, in the middle of researching, I found incredible pieces of contemporary visual art.
I saw some information about another female exhibition not from the US, either European: “She who tells a story – women photographers from Iran and the Arab World,” which got my attention. I´ve got so impressed by those images, but somehow this series of Newsha Tavakolian was my focal point. Entitled “Listen”, here it comes a spoiler: it is a visual text over female singers forbidden to speak up. Invisibility and voiceless are current words when we think about women´s history, no matter which segment they have been. This exhibition (now, a book) is an inside point of view of their cultures and some stereotypes from outsiders. In distorted ways of seeing those women, so I write here as actually an invitation to search more of non-white women photographers, such as worldwide, and you´ll see incredible works of art.
